According to the official website
"The Numeracy Project is focused on developing children's understanding of numbers, and their ability to use numbers to solve problems. Children may solve number problems by counting, adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, or combinations of these."

Lots of people do not realise that numeracy is one of a small part of mathematics. I saw some kids who can calculate as quick as computer could not solve simple mathematics questions. Counting is important but students can not survive only with numeracy because what they have to deal with is the world which changes ridiculously fast. They need to improve wider range of skills urgently.

The other day, I saw some student using addition when they were supposed to find difference. It did work in some of the simple questions, but in most of the cases, the concept led confusion and tears when they have to start with complicated one especially in high school level of mathematics.

However, I actually use and teach the numeracy project way of thinking when I am teaching, but not always. I still value the numeracy project but we still need old way of teaching as much as the new teaching approach. Algorithm is as important as rounding or partitioning.

Every student has different brain structure... I mean different way of thinking. So we need to find the best way for the students sitting in front of us.

This is from my perspective. I may be wrong, but my major was mathematics in my Uni and I have taught maths to more than 1000 students for 18 years in Japan and NZ.
